Where to Shop
Palm Beach Bungalows are self-catering accommodation. We supply a well-equipped kitchenette and facilities for making a cup of tea or coffee, but you will need to make sure you have provisions for your stay.
Palm Beach Store is within easy walking distance, and is open from 8.30am to 5.30pm in winter and 8am to 6.30pm in summer. The store is under new management and is now supplying good quality basics, including lovely artisan bread and baked items. They also do great coffee and toasties, if you fancy a simple breakfast at the beach.
Oneroa 4 Square or Waiheke Fruit & Vege are both on Oceanview Road, the main road through the village as you travel from the ferry to Palm Beach.
Raw at Waiheke, within walking distance, but you might prefer to taxi back, is in Putiki Road, Ostend. They have organic and gourmet supplies as well as fresh fruit and veges.
Countdown Supermarket – brand new, now located in the middle of Ostend village.
Open 7 days – 7am to 9pm (Accessible by bus from the Bungalows. Or walk there and taxi back).
They now offer delivery but please make sure you give clear instructions, including which Bungalow you are in, as we are not on-site to help with lost orders. You should also be aware that there is the danger that some of the wildlife will take an interest in your shopping, so the best option is to organise your delivery for a time when you know you will be there to receive it. There is also a service which delivers shopping to the wharf for a couple of hours in the afternoons – see Countdown’s website for details.
Te Matuku Bay Oysters now have a seafood shop in the Countdown complex.
Saturday market stalls (lots of food etc) are in the RSA grounds, Ostend. Saturday 8am-1.30ish
Ostend is being developed as a shopping hub for this part of the island so new shops and cafes are being added. The area is within walking distance (just!) of the Bungalows although you might prefer to catch a bus or taxi back if loaded down with shopping!
As well as the supermarket, vege shop and cafes, there are a couple of lovely homeware and gift stores – True Blue and Likerish (down the drive behind the little row of shops) – a chemist, a liquor barn and a surf shop.

Cafes and Restaurants
(It’s often a good idea to phone first for evening bookings, as hours/days vary – some are only seasonal and closed for Winter; quiet kitchens close before 8pm)

The lovely new Arcadia restaurant has opened at the bottom of Palm Road, near the beach. You can find menus here: https://www.arcadiawaiheke.com/
Booking is recommended, especially in the summer. They do offer takeaways – and breakfast!
Sadly, this does mean that the old Palm Beach Fish & Chips shop, which was flooded last winter, is no more. But Arcadia is a very nice replacement and fish & chips are still available, from The Oyster Inn, The Local or Vino Vino (all in Oneroa), Little Oneroa Beach Takeaway or Charley Farley’s in Onetangi.
Palm Beach Store is a great place to pick up a simple breakfast – really good coffee plus a toastie or Danish. They have a little seating area and a book swap (when you’ve finished your beach reading, just leave it in the cupboard and choose something else!). Or you can take your breakfast down to the beach and sit under the palms or stroll by the waves.

Ostend village (20mins’ walk)
Cappadocia deli, Turkish food and great coffee. 7 Belgium Street, Ostend. This is very new, replacing Timbuktu which closed during the pandemic. They're open until 8.30pm but I recommend getting in early to get some of the delicious delicacies on offer. And the BEST Turkish delight! 09 972 2871

Mudbrick Vineyard sea and city views, restaurant 09 372 9050 We recently dined in their more relaxed dining space, the Archive Bistro, and can thoroughly recommend it. On the evening we went (October 2019), we timed our visit for just before sunset, and had a table looking out over the beautiful garden, to the sea Auckland city, with the Waitakere Ranges as a backdrop. Really magical, and the food, wine and service were all perfect.

Rocky Bay cafe – a wonderfully eccentric slice of real island life. Only open Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 1pm, but don’t leave it until near the end if you want the pick of their incredible home baking! Check their facebook page to confirm that they’re open, especially in the winter months.
